Whitening lightens your own teeth in a 45-minute in-office session, with trays to take home for top-ups. It does not change crowns, fillings or laminates.

Whitening, also called bleaching, uses a peroxide gel to lighten the colour inside your natural teeth. It removes nothing from the tooth. It only changes shade, and only on natural enamel and dentine.
At our Malad West clinic, our dentists carry out whitening. We examine your teeth first, because whitening over untreated decay or exposed roots is uncomfortable and can make those problems worse.
The session itself is simple. What takes judgment is knowing whether whitening is the right tool for your kind of stain, and telling you when it is not.
One session of about 45 minutes. We protect your gums, apply the gel and activate it. It is the quicker route and suits people with an event coming up.
Trays and a lower-strength gel that you use for a short time each day. They are slower, and they are how you top up the shade later. We give trays after the in-office session.
We look for decay, cracks, worn enamel and receding gums, and clean the teeth if needed. We record your starting shade so you can see the change. Anything that needs treatment is done first.
Gums and lips are covered, then the gel is applied to the teeth for about 45 minutes in total. Some people feel a mild sensitivity or zing, and we can pause if it gets uncomfortable.

We compare your new shade to the starting one and fit trays for later top-ups. We tell you how to use them and when to stop if you feel sensitivity.

Whitening cannot lighten crowns, fillings, composite or laminates, and it does little for stains that sit deep inside the tooth. Tetracycline staining, injury to a tooth and some medicine-related discolouration often respond only partly. One patient came to us with deep yellow-brown teeth, and professional whitening hardly changed them. We covered them with E-max laminates.
If you plan veneers or crowns, we whiten first and match the ceramic to the new colour. A patient from the UK had whitening, then laser gum correction, then laminates in that order. If you only have mild surface stain, a scale and polish may be enough.
Typical cost across Mumbai
Laser or Zoom-type systems cost more than basic in-office whitening.

Whitening is not usually painful. Some people get a temporary zing or sensitivity during and after the session, which passes in a day or two. Tell us if it is more than mild and we will adjust.
It varies. Some people keep the result for a year or two with at-home top-ups, and less if they drink a lot of tea or coffee or smoke. It is not a one-time fix.
It depends on the starting colour and the cause of the stain. Yellowish teeth usually respond better than grey or brown stains. We compare your shade before and after on a shade guide, and we do not promise a particular number.
When done properly under a dentist, whitening does not remove enamel. Overuse of strong gels or unsupervised kits can irritate gums and increase sensitivity. That is why we check your teeth first.
Yes, but those parts will not change colour. They may then look darker than your lightened natural teeth. We may suggest replacing them to match, and we plan that before whitening.
Whitening is usually put off during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and for young children. It can wait. Ask us at the exam if you are unsure.
