Veneers are thin shells that cover the front of a tooth to change its shape, size or colour. We plan every set with a digital preview first.

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It hides chips, cracks, gaps, uneven shape and stains that whitening cannot reach. Veneers are also called laminates, and the two words mean the same thing here.
At our Malad West clinic, our dentists plan veneers. Cosmetic dentistry is a main focus of our practice. Before any tooth is touched, you see a digital preview of the planned shape, so you can approve it or ask for changes.
We use the least reduction the design allows. Some cases need almost none. Others need a thin layer of enamel taken off, and we tell you which group you fall in before you agree to anything.
Made in a dental lab from ceramic and fitted over about three visits. They resist stains well and last for years with care. A thin layer of enamel is removed, so the step cannot be undone.
E-max is a glass ceramic that looks close to natural enamel, even in a thin layer. We use it when the colour underneath is dark or when the front teeth are on show a lot. The enamel trade-off is the same as for porcelain.
Built directly on the tooth in the chair, usually with little or no drilling. They cost less and can be repaired or removed. They pick up stains sooner than ceramic and may need polishing or repair over the years.
We check your teeth and gums, take photographs and an X-ray, and discuss what you want to change. You see the digital preview and agree the shape and shade. Any decay or gum problem is treated before veneers are planned.
Under local anaesthesia, the dentist reshapes the front of each tooth by a small amount. You usually feel pressure rather than pain. We take impressions for the lab and fit temporary covers so you can leave with a presentable smile.

We try the veneers in, check the colour and bite, and bond them once you are happy. A final polish and bite check follow. In urgent cases, such as Sanjay's film shoot, we have compressed the work into three days.

Veneers are not the right answer for everyone. If you have active gum disease, we treat that first and may decide to wait. If you grind heavily and will not wear a night guard, ceramic can crack, and composite bonding may be the safer choice.
When teeth are very crowded or sit far out of line, braces or clear aligners from our orthodontist, Dr. Ila Vyas, move the teeth into place without cutting any enamel. Veneers can hide mild crowding, but they cannot fix a bite. For a single chipped edge or a small gap, composite bonding is often enough and can be undone.

Porcelain from premium labs and treating many teeth at once push the cost up.

Ceramic veneers need a thin layer of enamel removed, and enamel does not grow back. That is why we only recommend them when the benefit is clear. Composite veneers usually need little or no removal.
Porcelain veneers often last 10 to 15 years with good care, and composite veneers usually a shorter time. Grinding, hard foods and gum disease shorten that. Nobody can promise an exact number of years.
Composite veneers sometimes can. Ceramic veneers are made in a lab, so they usually need a few days between preparation and fitting. Gauri and Gail had composite laminates placed over two appointments on two days.
Yes, with common sense. Normal meals are fine once the anaesthesia wears off. Avoid biting into very hard food such as bones or ice with the front teeth.
A good set matches the shape, shade and translucency of your other teeth. We check the design on the digital preview and in a trial fit before bonding. Tell us if you want a more natural, less white result.
Keep the veneer if you have it and call us. A chip can often be polished or repaired. A veneer that has come off may be re-bonded if the tooth underneath is healthy.
Typical Duration
Usually 3 visits for porcelain or E-max; composite veneers can be done in 1 to 2 visits
