A gum specialist assesses how far the disease has gone, and we use a dental laser to clean and disinfect the pockets. It supports good home care and does not replace it.

Gum disease starts as inflammation, called gingivitis, and can progress to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets. Bacteria collect in these pockets and slowly damage the bone that holds the teeth. The early stage is reversible. The later stage can be controlled but not undone.
Dr. Aanchal Sahni, who holds an MDS in Periodontology, plans gum treatment at our clinic. We use a surgical dental laser alongside standard cleaning to disinfect the pockets and remove inflamed tissue, and in many cases the procedure involves less bleeding and fewer stitches than conventional gum surgery.
Laser does not cure gum disease by itself. What decides the long-term result is how well the mouth is kept clean afterwards, and we plan the follow-up visits for that reason.
After the tartar is removed from the root surfaces, the laser is used inside the pocket to reduce bacteria and clean the gum lining. This suits early to moderate gum disease.
Inflamed or overgrown gum tissue is trimmed with the surgical laser. It is used where swollen gum hides the pockets or makes cleaning difficult.
For deep pockets with bone loss, a traditional surgical approach may be needed so that our gum specialist can see and clean the roots directly. Laser can still help during the procedure.
We measure pocket depths around each tooth, check for bleeding and looseness, and take an X-ray to see the bone level. This tells us the stage of the disease and which treatment fits.
Local anaesthesia may be used to numb the area for comfort, depending on how deep the work goes. Tartar is removed from the root surfaces, which is the most important part of the treatment.
The laser is passed along the inside of the gum pockets and over inflamed tissue. Protective eyewear is worn by everyone in the room. You may feel warmth or a light tickle.

We recheck the gums after a few weeks to see whether the pockets have reduced. Some mouths need a second round, and we tell you early if that looks likely.

Laser Gum Treatment: What It Treats and Why →
If the gum problem is mild, a good scaling and a change in brushing and flossing habits is often enough, and we will say so. Laser is an addition for specific situations, not a requirement for every gum problem.
Where bone loss is advanced or a tooth is very loose, no laser can save it, and we discuss splinting, extraction and replacement honestly. A diabetic or smoker needs extra care, as both affect how the gums heal.

Many people need little or no anaesthesia for the laser itself, but we use local anaesthesia when the cleaning goes deep. You may feel warmth, pressure or a mild tickle. The gums can be sore for a day or two afterwards.
It depends on the case. For soft tissue work, laser often means less bleeding and fewer stitches. As an add-on to root cleaning for gum pockets, the research is mixed, and the cleaning itself does most of the work. For deep bone defects, conventional surgery is still the right tool.
Gingivitis can be reversed. Periodontitis can be brought under control, but bone that has been lost does not return on its own. This is why keeping up home care and check-ups matters.
One to three, depending on how much of the mouth is affected. The mouth is often treated in sections. Our gum specialist will tell you after the first assessment.
Teeth loosened by inflamed gums can firm up as the inflammation settles. If the bone support is gone, they may stay loose. The X-ray shows which situation you are in.
Dental lasers are widely used and approved for soft tissue work. Protective eyewear is worn throughout, and the energy is kept on the gum and pocket, away from the tooth surface.
