Complete and partial dentures replace missing teeth with a removable set. We explain what living with one is really like, and when implants may suit you better.

A denture is a removable set of false teeth. A complete denture replaces all the teeth in one jaw. A partial denture fills the gaps between the teeth you still have and clips onto them.
Dentures are the oldest answer to tooth loss and still a sensible one, particularly when many teeth are missing, when surgery is not possible, or when cost matters. We make them to fit your gums and your bite, and we spend time on the fit because a loose denture is the most common complaint.
We will also tell you plainly if implants would give you a better result.
Replaces every tooth in the upper or lower jaw and rests on the gums. An upper denture holds better because of the shape of the palate. A lower denture has less to grip and tends to move.
Fills gaps and clips to the teeth you still have. It keeps your remaining teeth in place, but the clips need careful cleaning.
A few implants can hold the new teeth firmly, so nothing slips. One of our patients wore a partial acrylic denture for years, then moved to two implants with a fixed zirconia bridge. This option takes longer and costs more.
We examine the gums and any remaining teeth and take an X-ray. Loose teeth that cannot be saved are removed, and the gums usually need some weeks to heal before the denture is made.
We take impressions of your gums and record how your jaws meet. This is the step that decides how well the denture fits.
You see and test the teeth set in wax before the final denture is made. We can change their shape, size or shade at this point.
We fit the finished denture and adjust sore spots. Expect one or more review visits in the first weeks, because gums need to settle.

Types of Dental Implants: A Guide for Patients →
Real cases from our clinic, shared with each patient's consent. Results differ from person to person.
If you have enough bone and are healthy enough for minor surgery, implants usually chew better and do not slip. They cost more and need months of healing. We discuss this at the first visit, and a denture can sometimes be made first, with implants considered later.
If only one or two teeth are missing and the neighbours are sound, a fixed bridge is usually more comfortable than a partial denture. We would not suggest a denture over a good bridge or implant for a small gap.

Most people need a few weeks. Speaking, chewing and extra saliva feel odd at first. A lower denture usually takes longer than an upper one.
A well-fitted upper denture usually stays in place. Lower dentures move more. If yours slips, come in for an adjustment; implants can fix the problem if it persists.
No. Take them out at night so the gums can rest, and keep them in water.
Sometimes. An immediate denture is possible, but the gums shrink as they heal, so it needs relining later.
Usually several years, but the fit changes as your gums and bone change, so most need relining or replacing. Cracks or loose teeth mean it is time to come in.
Most foods, yes, after you adjust. Very sticky or hard foods remain difficult. Cutting food into small pieces helps.
